DEPUTY PRINCIPAL'S REPORT
Lighthouse Christian College is firmly dedicated to fostering, not just academic excellence, but also the holistic development of our students. This dedication is evident by the bustling past two weeks. Our schedule was packed with events including the Primary Musical, an engaging Parent Networking Breakfast, vibrant Book Week activities and dress-up, as well as a series of enriching excursions and exhilarating sporting competitions.
In this pursuit, one of our fundamental pillars is respect – respect for ourselves, for others, and for the diverse world around us. In a world of shifting values, LCC remains anchored in the unchanging principles of respect as illustrated in the Bible that every individual is uniquely crafted in the image of God.
Jesus taught us the importance of respect in every facet of our lives. As we love our neighbours as ourselves, we naturally honour them as God's creation. Philippians 2:3-4 says, “Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others”.
Respect is also not just reserved for those we agree with; it extends to those with differing opinions and backgrounds. Romans 12:10 encourages us to "Outdo one another in showing honour," reminding us that our differences are opportunities to display the love of Christ.
At Lighthouse Christian College, we integrate biblical teachings into daily life, fostering an atmosphere where students, educators, and staff interact with respect, kindness, and empathy. As we navigate challenges and triumphs together, let's remember that respect isn't just a value; it's a reflection of our commitment to living out Christ's example in our school community and beyond.

BOOK WEEK
Last week, Primary students celebrated Book Week! Each class was given a 2023 CBCA selected book and students enjoyed a reading of the different books as they rotated between classes. Students also excitedly dressed up to the theme of their class book for our annual parade. They were greeted by Alice and the White Rabbit as they showed off their fun and creative costumes, as well as shared the lessons they learnt from the book. Our Wushka Competition winners were also awarded their prizes for the most books read. To end the week, students enjoyed a theatrical performance based on this year’s books by Perform Education. What a fun and memorable week for all!

ART EXHIBITION
Lighthouse Christian College was blessed with the opportunity to hold Mark Liu’s first art exhibition on Friday 18 August. During the past year, Mark has formed an interest in producing canvas paintings and has been working hard on developing his artistic talent in the hope of one day presenting his work to the community. In recognition of Mark’s talent, the well-being team at Lighthouse Christian College took the opportunity to team up with Mark to celebrate him and his work by holding his own art exhibition. The exhibition consisted of the sgraffito technique, minimalism, paint pouring, and colour play. Staff, students and special guests were all very impressed by the quality of work on show. Lighthouse Christian commends Mark on his outstanding achievement. Mark is very gifted and has a bright future ahead of him!
Mark Liu (Year 6): “Thank you Lighthouse Christian College for making this exhibition possible for me. I also would like to thank everyone who attended the event. The support received is very encouraging to continue producing and improving my artwork. Thank you!”

Year 3 - Bee Incursion
It has been a buzzing term for the Year 3s as they learn more about bees and its impact on our eco-system. To further extend their learning, the Year 3s were immersed in an incursion by Holly’s Backyard Bees who shared her experiences as a beekeeper and how we could equip ourselves to help with protecting this amazing species that God has created!
One of the ways that we could help protect the wonderful creation that God has made, is to reduce the use of plastic. Learning to make Beeswax Food Wraps, the Year 3s learnt how we could be more environmentally friendly towards mother earth!
Primary Production - ‘Music Machine’
“There’s no other gadget that you have ever seen!” The Music Machine was a huge success and all of primary (students and staff) alike had a blast in the lead up to production night. Along with the preparation for the various parts they played, the students learned to practice the Fruit of the Spirit of Love, Joy, Peace, Patience, Kindness, Goodness, Faithfulness, Gentleness and Self-Control. We hope you (parents and families) enjoyed the show as much as we did!
Melbourne Rocks Times Tables Competition
From June 17-18, 2023, the Year 3-6 students took part in a statewide times tables competition run by Times Tables Rock Stars. Though we may not have won the competition as a whole school, it was great to witness our student’s eagerness to participate in the competition whilst learning their times tables. Within our school community, our classes and students who came in the Top 3 category were awarded with certificates by Miss Price.

SCIENCE WEEK
The theme of Science Week 2023 was ‘Innovation: Empowering Future Industries’. This year Science students were engaged in an immersive escape room activity, involving hydrogen which is increasingly being considered as the fuel of the future since it is a sustainable alternative to fossil fuels. They were required to work out codes by completing practical experiments and solving puzzles to shut down a virtual facility where hydrogen was escaping from a storage tank that had sprung a leak. Much excitement was generated as students battled to find these codes to unlock and activate the manual shutdown to prevent a hydrogen gas explosion, all within a time limit. Additionally, as they moved around the room carrying out the investigations, they gained valuable experience in teamwork, safe practices, correct use of scientific equipment and problem solving.

Environmental Club
The environmental club run by the VCE Vocational major students had their first meeting on August 7. The participants were given an A3 paper to brainstorm ideas on how we can help take care of the school environment as well as the planet. Students brainstormed many ideas such as turning off lights, conserving water, planting trees, educating others about environmental issues and much more.
In the second meeting of the Environmental Club, on August 21, students were able to pick and plant their own succulents. We had a wonderful guest, Chris, who came in to teach and demonstrate the students how to plant succulents. Many of the students were excited to plant and take care of their own succulent.
It was wonderful to hear when we got feedback from a parent from one of the students who attended the second meeting. They were over the moon when they saw their son with a cute succulent. The VCE Vocational Major students hope to see more students join theenvironmental club as we will hold many more activities.

Climate Changers Forum
Fifteen year nine students attended the Climate Changes Forum and were engaged with the activities program provided by the council and were responsible representative of LCC showing that they take being good stewards of God's creation seriously. They were featured in the Greather Dandenong Council News (see below for the article and photo).

Local secondary school students have shared their concerns about climate change at The Climate Changers Forum. Hosted by Council’s Youth and Family Services team alongside the trategic and Environmental Planning department the engaging day featured interactive workshops and presentations. Sixty students from five local schools developed their environmental leadership skills and shared their thoughts and concerns about climate change.
One participant said: “Climate change is real. It’s affecting our planet and we need to do something about it”. The day revealed that young people in Greater Dandenong are worried about:
Although young people were concerned about climate change, they were hopeful about the progress that could be made if we act now. Students brainstormed ideas to tackle climate change and make a positive environmental impact – individually, at school, and as a community.
One student said: “Creating change starts with us. There are small actions that we can take every day to make a difference”. Another encouraged others to take
action saying: “There are so many ways to help save the planet – big or small, all efforts are valuable”.
