Value of the Month - Courage

Consequently, you are no longer foreigners and strangers, but fellow citizens with God’s people and also members of his household,

built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus himself as the chief cornerstone.

In him the whole building is joined together and rises to become a holy temple in the Lord. Ephesians 2: 19-21

DEPUTY PRINCIPAL'S REPORT

At Lighthouse Christian College, ensuring the safety of our students, staff, and the community is a top priority. We believe that a secure and nurturing environment is crucial for effective teaching and learning. By implementing comprehensive safety measures, we aim to create a space where everyone feels protected and can thrive spiritually, academically, emotionally, and socially. By prioritizing safety, we aim to cultivate an environment of trust and support, allowing everyone to reach their God given potential.

To alleviate the traffic situation that we face daily as well as in the interest of safety for all members of our college community, we have introduced some changes to our school dismissal procedures.

These include -

  • Primary pick-up: 3.15pm – 3.35pm
  • Secondary pick-up: 3.35pm – 3.45pm

If you have both Primary and Secondary students, please adhere to the Secondary dismissal times. Your Primary aged children will be cared for by the staff in the Sports Centre until you arrive to collect them and their siblings.

Kiss & Go

The Kiss & Go area has now been split into to two areas (see map below):

  • Kiss & Go Embarking Area
  • Kiss & Go Waiting Area

During Primary dismissals, Primary student’s names will be called, and they will head towards the “Kiss & Go Embarking Area” ready for pick up. It will be much appreciated if you do not signal your child towards your car as students will only be allowed to enter their cars in the designated embarking

area.

Cars will now only be allowed to be in the Kiss & Go Embarking Area for a maximum of 2 minutes. Any vehicles exceeding this time frame in this area will be asked to do a loop to keep the traffic flow moving (to ease up the backlog of cars onto Springvale Rd).

Traffic wardens will be directing traffic each day and we would appreciate your cooperation to ensure a smooth and safe dismissal for our school community.

“And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds,” Hebrews 10:24 NIV

TECHNOLOGY & WELLBEING

We know that finding good apps for our children can be a daunting task, but we have some recommendations that will not only entertain your children but also help them grow in their faith and academic abilities. For faith-based apps, consider downloading Bible apps such as Bible for Kids and Superbook Kids Bible. These apps offer interactive Bible stories, quizzes, and games that will help your child learn about God's Word ina fun and engaging way.

For reading, consider downloading the Epic! app, which offers a huge library of age-appropriate books for your child to read on their device. The app also tracks their progress and recommends new books based on their interests.

For math, check out apps such as IXL and Matific, which we have a subscription to, or SplashLearn. These apps offer fun games and challenges that help children improve their math skills in areas such as addition, subtraction, and multiplication.

Lastly, check out apps such as Duolingo and Lingokids that teach children new languages through games and interactive lessons. Remember to always monitor your child's use of technology and encourage them to balance their screen time with other activities. With the right apps and guidance, your child can have fun while learning and growing in their faith and academic abilities.

Return of the Alumni : Secondary Chapel and Year 12 Mentoring Afternoon Tea!

It has been great to see Lighthouse alumni students back on the grounds over the past couple of weeks, namely Lauren Cooper (Class of 2015), Kasha Schubert (Class of 2012) and Solomon George (Class of 2018)!

It was great to have Lauren Cooper share at our Secondary Chapel on Thursday 4 May, where she shared her personal testimony of life experiences while encouraging the students to keep their eyes on God in a personal relationship with Him. Lauren has worked closely with legal firms, businesses and organisations in her time post-Lighthouse, as well as members of parliament and government agencies. She is regularly called upon to educate, train and motivate within schools, universities, organisations and businesses to lead in educating individuals and companies on purpose and finding fulfilment – it was a privilege to have her come back and inspire the next generation!

Kasha Schubert & Solomon George also joined Lauren on Monday 8 June to form an Alumni panel for the Year 12 Mentoring Afternoon Tea – a blast from the past for many teachers and even students! They shared on the importance of continuing to pursue God post-school and how scores don’t ultimately define your path after Year 12, amongst other pearls of wisdom. It was great to be encouraged by those who have done the LCC journey before – there’s always so much we can

learn. Many thanks to all three for their time investing in the LCC students of now!

HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY!

Mother’s Day is very special to kids and mothers for self-evident reasons. Lighthouse ELC organised an afternoon tea event to express respect and honour to mothers. The children presented two special songs, cards and hand-made gifts to their mums. The mothers enjoyed playing some fun games in small groups

and eating a variety of finger food items for the afternoon tea. They were encouraged by Mr. Holloway’s inspiring words and engaged in conversation with

other mothers and the school community.

CROSS-COUNTRY (P - 2)

This Term, our Prep to Year 2 students had the opportunity to participate in cross-country running. It was a wonderful experience for all involved, as our students not only had fun but also learned valuable lessons. The event provided an opportunity to build character and deepen their faith, as they worked hard and encouraged one another. It was heart-warming to see the students cheering each other on, embodying the spirit of unity and support.

CROSS COUNTRY (YRS 3-6)

The rain cleared just in time for the Year 3 - 6 Primary House Cross-Country at Spring Valley Park on Thursday May 4, 2023. All students put in a big effort running the course and it was wonderful to see them all supporting one another, showing courage and perseverance and trying their hardest from the start right through to the finish line. Examples of great sportmanship were shown throughout the day by the students from Lighthouse Christian College.

A big thank you to Mr Daniel Eddison (Head of Sport Primary), teachers, alumni and parent volunteers for their efforts on the day and especially to all the students who made this event a success!

SECONDARY

What fuels your courage?

Our default response to fear is natural. Fear strikes us without warning; we never consider all the reasons we might be scared. However, having courage and strength takes effort. We frequently have to consider many justifications for why we should face our worries head-on with courage. God encourages us to be courageous because it is something we must work for. It is necessary to summon courage when faced with fears from all angles, including from within. But where can we find this courage?

Within the scripture there is a fine lineage of Godly courage. Whether it be Abraham or Jacob, Moses or even Jesus, each of these biblical heroes had to summon the fortitude necessary to carry out their missions. Despite their fear at the notion of doing so, they took the action they felt was necessary.

What gave them the courage? Faith. Because the courageous person acts on what they believe to be right despite the prospect of danger, whether actual or perceived, courage is an act of faith. So it doesn’t matter if it’s this week or the next month or year. Think about what fuels your courage. Is it real and full of truth, will it benefit you and your wellbeing? Is it as strong as your faith?

Remember as Jesus has fulfilled all of God's promises to us, we shouldn't be fearful and instead allow our hearts be filled with bravery by trusting that what God has already promised is true. In saying that, what can you do to show your courage? More importantly what fuels it? And how can this grow your faith? Take some time to pray this week and have a read of these scriptures 🙂

YEAR 9 LEARNING EXPERIENCE WEEK

The Maths and Science component of Year Nine activities week took place at Scienceworks, Spotswood. We mapped out an exciting day for all to enjoy, which included the programs: ‘Electricity, Magnets and Movement’ and ‘Beyond Perception’; alongside two free viewing opportunities: ‘Think Ahead’ included more than 200 objects from the past, the present and the speculative future, this exhibition blends technology with hands-on experiences, and ‘Sportsworks’ where students were challenged to stretch their mind and their muscles: To pit their skills against some of Australia's best-known sportspeople and investigate their body's abilities for particular sports. Are you tall? Flexible? Can you jump high, run fast or react quickly? Then maybe you would like to take the sporting challenge at Sportsworks and learn all about the science behind moving your body.

The faculties of Humanities and LOTE hosted students at Sovereign Hill for a fascinating look at how the Industrial Revolution and the migration Chinese people during the gold rush era took place in Victoria. Speaking of having a look, some of our students also found time in between educational sessions to look deeply into their pans for gold. And EUREKA, there was gold to be found!

ART AND TECHNOLOGY DAY

On Art and Technology day, we learned about how game design and programming works. It was an awesome experience, learning about how gaming works and how we could interact in creating the game. We even saw how gaming in the future would be like, which brought even more excitement to us! I really enjoyed this experience! - Olivia Ramachandran 9A

On day 2 of the Year 9 Learning Experience, we spent the day at The Academy of Interactive Entertainment (AIE) to celebrate the areas of Art & Technology. Students heard from industry experienced teachers and were taken through activities that gave them a taste of game design and development. All the students really enjoyed themselves and learnt more about what could be a potential career pathway.
