DEPUTY PRINCIPAL'S REPORT

Emergency Preparedness: Understanding Our Lockdown and Evacuation Procedures

Last week, the College conducted an emergency lockdown drill shortly before the end of the day. At this time, a number of parents were already onsite waiting to collect their children. This timing was intentional as an emergency could occur at any time, including during afternoon collection when parents and visitors are on the College grounds.

Where appropriate, our emergency drills are conducted without advance notice to staff and students. This allows us to test our procedures under realistic conditions, identify any gaps and debrief afterwards so that improvements can be made. While drills may cause some temporary inconvenience, they are an essential part of ensuring that our community knows how to respond during a real emergency. Practising these procedures could ultimately save lives.

Our alarms include spoken instructions so that everyone, including visitors unfamiliar with our procedures, can immediately understand what is happening:

  • If you hear the lockdown alarm, which clearly announces that a lockdown is occurring, immediately move to the nearest safe and secure place like the MP Hall, remain out of sight and stay as quiet as possible. Silence your mobile phone and follow any directions given by College staff. Do not attempt to locate or collect your child. Remain hidden until an announcement over the intercom confirms that the lockdown has ended.
  • If you hear the evacuation alarm, which clearly announces that an evacuation is occurring, follow the displayed evacuation signs to the oval. Parents and visitors should gather with Admin staff at the bottom of the cricket pitch and await further instructions.

Many organisations use different siren sounds to distinguish between a lockdown and an evacuation. However, these sounds may mean little to a visitor. Our alarms use spoken messages so that everyone onsite receives clear and immediate instructions about the action required.

This is also why we require all parents and visitors attending the College during school hours to follow the appropriate sign-in procedures. An accurate record of who is onsite allows us to account for people during an emergency and identify anyone who may be missing.

We understand that being present during an unannounced drill may feel unsettling. However, we ask every member of our community to treat any alarm as genuine and respond immediately.

If you were onsite during the drill and noticed anything that may help us strengthen our emergency procedures, we welcome your feedback. Please contact the College so your observations can be considered as part of our review.

Thank you for supporting the College as we continue strengthening our emergency preparedness and helping to keep students, staff, families and visitors safe.

MUSIC

Celebrating our AMEB students

Over the last few weeks some of our instrumental music students travelled to Hawthorn to undertake their Australian Music Examinations Board (AMEB) practical examinations.

Preparing for these exams involves many months of consistent practice and commitment. Each student prepared a program of pieces as well as technical work, aural skills, sight-reading and general musical knowledge, before completing a one-to-one examination with an AMEB examiner.

We congratulate our students not only for the work they put into preparing for their examinations, but also for having the courage to step into the examination room and put their skills to the test. Regardless of the results they receive, there is much to celebrate in the discipline, resilience and musical growth they have demonstrated throughout the process.

We are very proud of each of our students and hope this experience encourages them to continue growing and finding joy in their music-making.

Congratulations to our 2026 AMEB candidates:

Levi Ng 2A - Violin

Bianca Li 4C - Flute

Claudia Yang 4A - Flute

Gabriella Jabin 5C - Violin

Yug Patel 6A – Trombone

Micah van Haaster 6B - Clarinet

Cynthia Zhang 7B - Trumpet

Isabelle Wong 7C - Flute

SPORT

CSEN Netball Championship

This year was our first time competing in the CSEN Netball Championships, with both our Junior and Senior teams taking on schools from across the CSEN Network. Both teams had a great day, showing plenty of teamwork, determination and sportsmanship throughout their games.

It was particularly exciting to see both teams make their way through to the Bronze Medal match! Though both teams finished just outside the podium in 4th place, it was a fantastic result for our first time competing.

We are incredibly proud of how the students represented our College and we can’t wait to see what our teams can achieve next year!

HPE Week

Last week our College celebrated HPE Week, and what a fantastic week it was!

The purpose of this week is to encourage and model to students the many ways each of us can participate in a healthy and active lifestyle. Throughout the week, students had the opportunity to participate in many activities, including a scavenger hunt, an art mural, a silent disco, giant tug of war, and gym and netball competitions. It was awesome to see so many students getting involved and enjoying being active with their friends.

The highlight of this week was the highly anticipated annual Staff v Students Soccer Match. Congratulations to the students on a well-deserved victory!

Our VCE VM students also played an important role throughout the week, providing free fruit cups and orange juice to secondary students and staff, as well as selling delicious chicken skewers and salad, demonstrating the importance of a balanced diet.

HPE Week is a great reminder that being healthy and active can look different for everyone. Whether it was competing, dancing at the silent disco, enjoying healthy food or simply getting moving, our College made healthy choices all week and had fun along the way.

Thank you to everyone who made HPE Week such a success!

Our 4-Year-Old Swimming Excursion!

We are thrilled to share that our recent swimming excursion to the Toby Haenen Swim Centre with the 4-year-old group was an absolute success from start to finish!

The adventure began bright and early with an exciting bus ride to the venue. The children were wonderfully behaved, practicing great travel safety while excitedly chatting about the water fun ahead.

Once we arrived at the swim centre, they continued to impress us by listening carefully to instructions from both our educators and the facility's professional instructors. It was amazing to watch their confidence grow as they practiced kicking their feet, balancing on the safety mat and playing water games together.

A massive thank you goes out to our incredible parent volunteers! We simply couldn't have run such a smooth, safe, and joyful trip without your generous time and helping hands.

Thank you again for partnering with us to make this a memorable milestone for the children!

Book Week Prep - Year6

Once upon a time, our Primary students stepped into the wonderful world of books as we celebrated Book Week!

Students took part in exciting rotations featuring CBCA shortlisted and recently published titles, discovering new books and authors along the way. These activities encouraged students to explore the joy of reading and share their enthusiasm for stories with one another.

During our Book Week Chapel, Red Riding Hood and the Big Bad Wolf hosted a special celebration and showcased our students’ imaginative costumes. From athletes and frogs to people who help us, our students certainly brought their favourite characters and ideas to life! We also celebrated the Term 2 Reading Competition winners and awarded the best costumes from each class. Congratulations to our overall winners, Isla (1C) and Felix (3A), who each received a Koorong gift card for their costumes.

We wrapped up our Book Week celebrations with an exciting incursion from Perform Education, where students enjoyed the interactive musical Something Special, filled with song, dance and plenty of fun!

Our students also showed incredible generosity throughout Book Week, raising a fantastic $849.45 for Reading Out Of Poverty (ROOP). These funds will go directly towards providing books and literacy resources to First Nations children and communities in East Arnhem Land, Northern Territory. A special congratulations to 1A, who raised the highest amount of $107.10!

A big thank you to our parents, teachers and students for supporting our Book Week activities and helping to make the week such a wonderful celebration of books, reading and imagination.

Minecraft Club

Our Minecraft club has continued to get more students joining and building collaboratively on our Thursdays during lunchtime.

We awarded prizes to the following students in our internal competition on Medieval Marvels. Students created medieval style creations that looked as defence from invading armies, securing food and water, and how water and elevated land can be utilised in the design.

Congratulations to the following students on their submissions;

Nathan G. - 1st

Shengtao L. - 2nd

Arav & Menuja - 3rd

Our newest build series is how Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have sustainably cared for Country for thousands of years. Teams must apply this ancient wisdom to design creative, nature-first solutions for modern environmental challenges within Minecraft.

Students have started exploring cultural burning to manage bushfires in summer connecting to indigenous content leant in class. They have also explored the Budj Bim cultural heritage area in Western Victoria exploring the system of Gundjitmara eel traps used in their aquaculture.

Year 5 TwistED Science Excursion

Our Year 5 students had a wonderful day exploring TwistED Science! They had the opportunity to visit a range of interactive stations, conduct experiments and deepen their understanding of science through hands-on experiences.

A highlight was exploring physical and chemical reactions and learning the importance of following safety protocols when conducting experiments. It was wonderful to see the students’ curiosity and excitement as they asked questions, made observations and discovered more about the world around them.

We are grateful for opportunities like this that encourage our students to be curious, thoughtful learners and to appreciate the wonder and complexity of God’s creation.

SECONDARY

Maths Association of Victoria

Lighthouse were proud to have the following students represent the school on Wednesday the 26th at the Maths Association of Victora Games Day.

Joel, Ivan, Hilary and Ryan travelled to Penleigh and Essendon Grammar School where they competed in a problem-solving exercise, connect the dots games, dice rolling decimal games and team problem solving to collect points against a range of schools. It was a great opportunity for our students to travel and represent the school in a team-based academic competition. They enjoyed making friends with like-minded peers from other schools as this has been a build up from their involvement in our Wednesday lunchtime Mathletes Maths Club.

Our students had a lot of fun fostering a love of maths in a room of like-minded students from over 40x schools.
