PRINCIPAL'S REPORT

It feels like yesterday when I welcomed the students back to school at the start of the school year. As the students embark on their education journey at the College, we would always urge them to do their best to achieve their God given potential.

In every student cohort, there are artists and actors who need not do exceptionally well in Mathematics, entrepreneurs that may not need in-depth knowledge of Literature and musicians whose marks in Statistics do not really matter. It is wonderful if your child attains top scores in the tests but let us not remove their confidence and self-worth if they do not. God made us unique, and He has a much better plan than us parents.

Let’s continue to be encouragers, love them and not put a negative label on our children. Having not done well in a test or examination will not remove God’s bigger plan for them. Always remember that professionals like doctors, bankers and lawyers are not the only people that are happy. We still need teachers, business owners, hairstylists, etc to keep the economy running. These people from other professions are happy and successful people too.

In marriage counselling, these statements are often used, “The first to apologise is the bravest. The first to forgive is the strongest. The first to forget is the happiest.” I am convinced that we could also use these words of wisdom in nurturing our youth at home.

I pray for the joy of the Lord to be with you and your family!

WELLBEING

R U OK? Day

During Week 9 of Term 3, Primary students celebrated friendship, belonging, and looking out for one another in our annual ‘R U OK?’ events. Many children chose to engage in a variety of fun lunchtime programs: open Music rehearsals, ‘O’ games, open-air worship and African Drumming. The purpose of ‘R U OK? Day’, held nationally on Thursday 12 September this year, is to create awareness of the need to check in with one another using the catchphrase, ‘Are you Okay?’ One of the highlights of the week was our R U OK? Chapel service where the primary students were blessed to hear from Secondary students, Aarzoo Lal (Wellbeing Captain) and Kayla Londy (Christian Faith Captain) as well as an entertaining skit from some of the Primary teachers.

Please encourage your children to continue this great practice of checking in with their peers and directing them to people and places that can support if further help is needed. As this year’s theme says, ‘ASK RUOK? ANY day.’

Primary Encounter Day

Primary finished term 3 with a day of Worship, bracelet making and fun. Over the past 3 terms we have been learning about the salvation story using colours. The children made bracelets with the colours that represent this story and practiced using their bracelets to tell others the story of Salvation through Jesus. We finished the day with a Mega chapel recounting the story, with these colours, through worship. We were then entertained by Comedian/Impersonator and Evangelist, Ben Price. He also shared some of the amazing opportunities he has had to share the gospel and reminded the children not to be afraid to tell others about Jesus, as it’s really important and God is always with them. We finished off the day with Joy!

MUSIC

Secondary Music Excursion to Monash University

On Thursday 10th of October, Music students from Years 7-10 visited Monash University in Clayton to watch a lunchtime concert at the Sir Zelman Cowen School of Music. The concert featured students studying in the Chamber Music stream at the university and included piano duos as well as a trio made up of Clarinet, Violin and Piano.

The pieces performed ranged in style from classical to contemporary and each performer provided background information about the music they were performing.

Overall, the concert provided our Lighthouse Music students with an outstanding opportunity to broaden their understanding of musical styles and performance, as well as to experience live music in a beautiful purpose-built venue.

PRIMARY - ELC - YEAR 2

Children enjoyed our first Physical Education (PE) lesson at the LCC Oval field. They learned about the rules of using the school oval and stayed together with the teachers. We began with our first PE lesson with a game “Sharks in the water.” This was a great warm-up physical activity for the children. The children were actively engaged in this activity and some of them initiated to be the sharks chasing the fish, some be the fish swimming in the water and avoid being tagged by the sharks.

This game helps children:

• Scanning the field of play to make decisions

• Looking for gaps on the field to avoid being tagged

• Cooperative play, supporting teammates

• Following rules and structures of a game

• Critical thinking through decision-making

Outcome 3: Wellbeing—Children demonstrate spatial awareness and orient themselves, moving around and through their environments confidently and safely.

WILDLIFE INCURSION

In the last week of Term 3, Year 1 students enjoyed an exciting ‘Tails and Talons’ incursion with Black Snake Productions. They met a variety of amazing animals, including Kimberley the rough-scale python, Snappy Tom the saltwater crocodile and Squirtle the friendly turtle. The students were especially thrilled to see the adorable potoroo up close and learned fascinating facts about each animal.

"It took five people to hold the big snake. I had fun!"- Emma

"Boss the monitor lizard was big and had a long tail". - Jonathan

"I got to hold a pinecone lizard. It felt prickly! - Trinity

PRIMARY - YEARS 3 - 6

Year 4 excursion- Polly Woodside.

This Term the Year 4’s will be learning about early settlers to Australia and early ocean exploration. The excursion to the Polly Woodside in the last week of Term 3 gave the students an up close and personal experience of life onboard a seafaring vessel.

They were all given opportunity to join the working life of other deck hands and complete different tasks such as scrubbing the deck, steering the ship, tolling the bell in case of danger and simulating bad weather in the crows nest.

The Year 4’s also had ample opportunity to explore the outside and inside of the ship and museum. We are happy to report that all students completed their work to the satisfaction of the First Mate’s on the day and will be awarded their “Deck hands certificate” shortly.

Enjoy the photos taken on our excursion to the Polly Woodside.

Blessings from the Year 4 Teachers.

SECONDARY

Welcome to Term 4!

We trust that you all had a restful break and are ready to finish off 2024 with a bang! As we Year 12s come to the end of our schooling journey at Lighthouse, we are extremely glad to say that this year has been a wonderful year full of incredible memories and little to no regrets. It has been an honour to be your student representative, and being given so many opportunities to step out of our comfort zone to reach out and make a difference in the lighthouse community. We have made so many new relationships across the school, and it has been such a pleasure getting to know each and every one of you.

From the time that we have started school at lighthouse, we have both been able to see the school grow and transform into what it is today. It has been such a blessing and we hope that we have firmly planted our legacy here at Lighthouse.

Thank you to all our Mentors, teachers that have given us many opportunities to step up and give back to the school!

As of writing this, it is October 2024 and the bells have begun chiming ,which means that Christmas is nearly around the corner! You've probably heard of a project we've been running, Operation Christmas Child , where each class has been given shoeboxes to fill up with goodies to provide to a child in need to make their Christmas great! (If it is not yet past the collection date) Please do consider donating a gold coin, and provide as much as you can to fill up the shoeboxes to show your expression of God’s love this term. Your generosity can truly change a kid’s life this christmas!

As we come to the end of the academic year, we urge you all to remain steadfast and tenacious whilst finishing off the rest of the year and be open to what God may want you to learn this term.

Thank you for a wonderful year and God bless you all!!

Secondary Encounter Camp 2024

On 20 September, 2024 we had our Encounter Camp, focused on the theme of ‘Entrenched’. As it says in Colossians 2:7, ‘Let your roots grow down into Him, and let your lives be built on him. Then your faith will grow strong in the truth you were taught, and you will overflow with thankfulness.’

Often times, we get caught up in the motions—of school, family, sport, etc—and forget to centre ourselves in Christ. This camp was a reminder to reconnect with God, allowing His truth to anchor us in our busy lives and to let Him guide us on the path He has desired for us. Through the worship, prayer, and small group discussions, we explored how to deepen our relationship with Him, not just during camp but in everyday life.

We were so privileged to have Pastor Aaron and Nikki Di Placido to preach the word of God to us throughout the camp. Wisdom was spoken throughout the camp, and God moved through so many people. In the bible it says ‘for where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them’ (Matthew 18:20) - and God was indeed there!

I truly believe that seeds were sowed in the camp, and that fruits of Gods work will bloom.

China Trip Reflection and Gratitude

Dear School Community,

We are thrilled to share the highlights of our recent China trip, an incredible journey of learning and discovery for our students. Despite a few unexpected changes due to weather, the experience was both enriching and fun for everyone involved.

The trip began in Beijing, where students engaged in Tai Chi at the Temple of Heaven Park and explored the historical grandeur of the Forbidden City. The hike along the Great Wall was a challenging but rewarding experience that left students in awe of this ancient wonder. We continued on to Xi’an, where they marveled at the Terracotta Warriors and learned about China’s rich history, while also sampling local cuisine and practicing their language skills.

Our time in Shanghai included visits to the beautiful Yu Garden and the iconic Pearl Tower, where students reflected on the country’s mix of modernity and tradition. Evening at the Bund offered stunning views of Shanghai's skyline. However, due to a typhoon in Hainan, our flight was redirected, and we transited through Qingdao. The students handled the change with enthusiasm, enjoying their final day shopping and exploring Qingdao’s MixC Mall. This detour became another opportunity for fun, relaxation, and bonding.

We are incredibly proud of how the students embraced every challenge and experience during the trip. Their curiosity, resilience, and teamwork were truly commendable, and they’ve returned home with broadened perspectives and unforgettable memories.

We’d also like to take this opportunity to share some exciting news: the lead planner of this trip, Ms. Jing Tang, has successfully delivered a baby boy! She is resting well at home, and we are deeply grateful for all her hard work in organizing such a fantastic journey for our students. Thank you to all the parents for your support and trust, and to our wonderful staff and tour guides for their dedication throughout the trip. We encourage families to consider future trips, as they offer invaluable experiences for learning and growth beyond the classroom.

We look forward to more adventures to come!

Warm regards,

Ms Esther Wong and Mr Mitchell Buck

VCE Legal Studies students on the go!

“Righteousness and justice are the foundation of your throne; love and faithfulness go before you.” Psalm 89:14

Learning the law and seeing it in action are two different things. VCE Legal Studies students visited the legal precinct to catch a glimpse of the law in action. Students saw the ‘human’ aspects of the law from Mr De Mel, a parent and lawyer, speaking of his experience as a lawyer dealing with different types of law and clients to seeing a young, accused man yearning for a touch of his mother’s hand through a glass barrier in the Magistrates’ Court.

Here are some observations of students -

The legal excursion to the courts and Mr De Mel's office was very fascinating. In the courts, we could see how court proceedings work and how to bow when entering and leaving the court. I enjoyed going to the courts and hearing cases. (Mercy Puoch)

The legal excursion provided me the opportunity to experience the application of legal studies in the real world. We went to De Mel Lawyers and learnt about their journey to opening their successful law firm. We also went to the Magistrates Court and heard real life cases which were very interesting to see how the law is applied in life. (Tiya Joseph)

I thoroughly enjoyed seeing all the different kind of cases; it was interesting to see how cases got resolved and also how lawyers interact within the court and with their clients. One thing I found interesting was how unintentionally funny the accused were at the security checks. (Nyagoa Rut)
