PRINCIPAL'S REPORT

It seemed not long ago when I welcomed students back to school at the start of the year. I am glad that students and staff members had a great and memorable school term. We are extremely thankful to our Heavenly Father for His continuous protection over the school community, bringing us together for numerous school events namely Parent Information Night, Parents’ Morning Tea, Twilight Fair etc.

There were several camps that took place during the term - Year 6@Canberra, Year 7@Coolamatong, Year 10@Mornington, Year 4@Mill Valley Ranch. Through the many team building activities during camps, students were able to establish new friendships with others who they were not familiar with but more importantly, they would remember these experiences for a long time.

The school will continue to build on the community spirit and providing more opportunities for parents’ involvement in supporting their children’s educational journey with the College. For parents who have volunteered to be part of the Parents & Friends Group in supporting the year level their children are in, more information will be provided for us to meet to find out the direction of the P&F soon.

For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” - Romans 6:23

As we prepare ourselves for the coming Easter break, I would like to remind families the need to reflect on Jesus’ sacrifice for our sins so that we are given the opportunity to have a renewed relationship with God.

May the Easter break bring you and your family peace and joy!

Creating Strong Passwords

Creating strong and unique passwords is an essential part of protecting personal information online. As parents, it's important to teach our children the importance of secure passwords and help them create strong and unique passwords. Here are some tips to help you get started:

  1. Encourage your child to create their own unique password. Suggest using a combination of numbers, symbols, and letters to make it harder to guess.
  2. Use a passphrase. A passphrase is a sequence of words that are combined to create a password.Encourage your child to choose four or five random words and put them together to create a passphrase.
  3. Create a phrase only you and your child know, then use the first letter of each word to create a password. For example, "My favourite colour is blue" could become "Mfcib1u!".
  4. Change passwords regularly. Suggest that your child change their password every six months or whenever they suspect that their account may have been compromised.
  5. Avoid common password mistakes. Remind your child to avoid using easily guessable information such as their name, birthdate, or common words.

By following these tips, you can help your child to create strong and memorable passwords that are unique to them. Teaching our children the importance of secure passwords can help them stay safe and secure online.

Stay safe online!

PRIMARY - ELC - YEAR 2

Lighthouse ELC had a Family Tea Party and it was a successful event. It was a joyful occasion celebrating the diversity of the ELC community and was well attended by parents and families. Parents brought a plate of their cultural food for a shared afternoon tea and came dressed up in their cultural costumes. Some students also came to kindergarten dressed-up in their costumes on that day.

Our special guests, Mr. Leong and Mrs. Kruize came to welcome and meet the families. The highlight was the children performed two songs to their parents and families. Thereafter, they received a gift of their family portrait made by the children. Parents and families have enjoyed meeting with other families and had social conversations while having snacks.

GYMNASTICS

Our Year 2 students have had an outstanding Gymnastics program from Week 6 to Week 9! They have grown both physically and spiritually through various exercises and drills that have improved their strength, flexibility, and coordination, while also learning important values like discipline, perseverance, and teamwork. We are so proud of our gymnasts' progress and can't wait to see them continue to flourish in all that they do!

Cleya: Gymnastics program has been awesome! I learned so many new skills!

Amira: I got to do a cartwheel today!

Eden: When I do well I get a sticker!

Zoe: I never thought I would be able to do a handstand but I did it today!

Kezia: I really liked how we got to play and learn new games with friends.

SCIENCE WORKS EXCURSION

The Year 3s went on an educational and enjoyable trip to Scienceworks. Students explored the mysteries of the universe and the planets in our solar system. The visual exhibition learning experience was the highlight of our day as students immersed themselves in the amazing world of science and technology. Students shared their thoughts and experiences at the end of the day; a perfect way to wrap up the excursion!

Year 4 Camp – Mill Valley Ranch

Archery -  Horse Riding - Lassoing  - Canoeing  -  Commando Course - Baby chicks  -  Night Hike  -  Horse Parade   -  Worship & Devotions  -

Ho-down dancing - Chapel Service  - Switch Game  - Blockbuster Game

When I got to school ready for camp it was pouring with rain. I played with some of my friends while I was waiting. When everyone finally arrived, we lined up, as we were about to go on the bus there was booming thunder and strikes of lightning. After being on the bus for awhile I started to feel bus-sick. I tried putting my hood over my head but it wasn’t working.

When the bus arrived at our destination I was really excited. The teachers told us what group we were in and we sat at the tables. Then began the activities. There was – canoeing, commando course, horse riding and more. When my group went to the cabins I tried to go to sleep but people kept talking.

After a tremendous camp and a big drive I was very happy to be reunited with my family.

Interschool Springvale division athletics

On the 31st of March, 43 students from years four to six represented Lighthouse Christian College in the Sporting School Victoria Springvale division athletics hosted at Duncan Mackinnon Reserve Athletics Track. In this event, Lighthouse competed against six state schools from Springvale.

Participating in a state school competition provided us the opportunity to display God's character - and it was encouraging to see the students' try their best, encourage and congratulate other competitors, cheer for their friends and have a humble spirit in victory - or a gracious spirit in defeat.

Students who finished first or second in their event will progress onto the Greater Dandenong district athletics which is taking place later in the year.

BOOK AUTHOR

What do I enjoy about writing?

It’s just calming for me, I guess. It’s like my antidepressant. I think it’s a shame that I have these fascinating dreams and ideas and thoughts and do not share them. Writing is like an extra pipe to pump creativity when it overflows (and not having to write it in notebooks and forget about those cool dreams and ideas.)

How did I first know I was good at writing?

I remember in Year 2 when my teacher told me ‘How am I supposed to send you to Year 3 when you can’t follow these instructions properly?’ Little did they know I DID get into Year 3 and my writing was four years above my level. Naplan went well, too, with theabove band six for my writing. I can remember my third-grade teacher telling me my writing was above level. The most shocking point in the day.

What made me want to publish my book?

Well, writing a book and not publishing it would be a waste of my time and my energy. I didn’t write a book just for it to sit in my computer somewhere and rot.

What was it like writing and publishing a book?

To put it simply, Stressful. There were technical difficulties and writer’s block several times in the process, and it was just exhausting.Worth it.

So here it is. My book.Available on Amazon.

SECONDARY

Dear Lighthouse Community,

As part of our Year 10 Careers program, our students have the opportunity to undertake one week of Work Experience from Monday 19th to Friday 23rd June. This is a wonderful opportunity for our students to engage with the industry they are interested to pursue in future and develop further work readiness skills.

I am reaching out to the school community to explore whether your work establishment is prepared to support one of our aspiring student's for the week?

Please note, the work entailed is to add value to your place of work mainly in a support and observation role and each student has undertaken a 'Safe at Work' Certificate which covers them for Work Safe and Public Liability Insurance.

If you have any further questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to reach out to me on 8796 7373.

Kind regards,

Jen Agesa

12B HOMEROOM

I have had the delightful opportunity to be the homeroom teacher of 12B. Over the first term I've witnessed my students embody the character trait of compassion - through their attitudes and support they show each other when facing their final year of schooling. This is a time filled with SACs, exams and important choices; but I know from the love, care and joy that is shared between the group, this year will be a memorable one.

This is a tight-knit group, and my prayer for the year 12's is for the friendships that are forged to last for a lifetime. The Bible talks about the value of friendship and teamwork through the two verses Proverbs 27:17 "As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another" and Ecclesiastes 4:10 "For if one falls down, his companion can lift him up; but pity the one who falls without another to help him up!". I pray this group will sharpen each other - and support each other through this final year, and beyond through the remainder of their lives.

Look out for these entrepreneurs!

“The plans of the diligent lead surely to abundance, but everyone who is hasty comes only to poverty.” Proverbs 21:5

As part of the Year 11 Business Management course taught by Georgia Karagiannis and Tricia Stone, students were required to start a social enterprise that would make a profit to meet a social need. Students investigated social enterprises like Thank You Water to consider how they meet this business objective. Working in groups, students formed a business to trade at the Twilight Fair. The students contributed part of their profits to the school’s fundraising efforts to support victims of the earthquakes in Turkey and Syria. They raised a nifty donation of $373.20!

Here are some of their reflections of the learning activity:

We were able to make a profit and contribute 30% towards the individuals and families affected by the earthquakes in Syria and Turkey. The tight budget of $25 per person stopped us from making considerably more profit. One interesting thing was that even with a tight budget we still made a substantial amount of money in a short amount of time. – Joshua Carvalho (11A)

Our stall exceeded expectations as we expected to have stock leftover however this was not the case. The negative part was we had more competition. Many people found our pricing expensive but still purchased our drinks. – Lewis Williams (11A)

It ran smoothly on the day and we were prepared. Some customers thought our pricing was too high and didn’t buy. Because of another stall selling can drinks too, we lowered some of our prices early. – Monique Greig (11A)
