PRINCIPAL'S REPORT

Welcome back!

At the start of every school term, it is always tough for students to get back into their normal learning routine. I would like to thank those parents for sending their children to school punctually before the start of school at 9 am. You are reminded for your child/ren to be present in school unless they are unwell. Families should not be leaving for holidays during term time except for emergencies. It is extremely challenging for your children to be interrupted with their learning when they are required to stop attending school.

It has also come to our attention that some students are often left unattended by their parents after school hours. As a College that places great priorities in Child Safety, parents are required to supervise your children when they are on the school ground after 3.45 pm. If parents are unable to pick their children by that time, they should contact Camp Australia so that your child is supervised. Research indicates that when at least one parent or significant adult is actively involved with the school, children tend to exhibit greater motivation to learn, develop a positive perception of the school, and foster productive relationships with their teachers. However, this awareness is often lacking among many parents.

It is essential for parents to understand that they play a significant role in their children's educational journey by:

1. Setting high expectations for their children.

2. Demonstrating interest in their children's interests.

3. Valuing learning and exemplifying behaviours of successful learners.

4. Establishing routines that prioritize health, well-being, and consistent home learning activities.

You are welcome to be part of our Parents & Friends team in assist us in many different ways in the College. More importantly, through your regular involvements in the College, you are able to provide constructive feedback to the College’s leadership for improvement.

ANZAC Day

ANZAC Day stands as a solemn occasion of remembrance observed nationally in Australia and New Zealand, dedicated to honouring the servicemen and women from both nations who have contributed to wars, conflicts, and peacekeeping endeavours. Initially marking the landing of Australian and New Zealand forces at Gallipoli on April 25, 1915, ANZAC Day has evolved into a pivotal national commemoration in Australia. Our Year 6 students have always been given the opportunity to participate in paying tribute to the members of the defence forces who have valiantly served our nation in times of war and in maintaining peace at the War Memorial during their Canberra trip.

Wishing you a great term ahead!

WELLBEING

Secondary Chapel – Parables!

It’s a new term and we’re diving into a new theme in Secondary Chapels…Jesus’ parables! These parables give us insight as to what the ‘Kingdom of Heaven’ is all about, and so we’re going on the journey to gain greater understanding. 😊

We started with hearing from Mr Kan last week (16th April), who spoke on the Parable of the Mustard Seed (Matthew 13:31-32). In this message we were challenged to not underestimate the impact that God can have through us, but rather allow faith to grow within us like a mustard seed growing into a huge tree.

Mr Kan also encouraged us to reflect on ‘who is our King’? Considering that a ‘Kingdom’ represents a domain where a King reigns, we need to choose who we’re following! The Kingdom of God is also like a movement – are we going to respond and take part in it…?

We’re excited to see where God takes this topic, and how He gives new revelation to Secondary on the importance of cultivating faith in Him. As seeds are planted within each student, we’re believing and praying for many warriors of faith to rise in this generation – all for the expansion of God’s Kingdom!!

Veterinary Hospital Role-Play

Children were confident engaging in the Veterinary Hospital role play with peers. They openly expressed their feelings and ideas in their interactions with others, learned to cooperate with others, negotiate roles and relationships in play and group experiences. We observed children used a wide variety of thinking

strategies to engage with situations and solve problem, and adapt these strategies to new situations.

YEAR 1 ANZAC DAY

In Year 1 we learnt about ANZAC Day through the story of ANZAC Ted.

ANZAC Day is on Thursday 25 April. We remember the people who died in the war – Michelle

We are thankful for the soldiers who died fighting for our country – Dominic

ATHLETICS DAY

Relive the excitement and cheers from our Prep - Year 2 Athletics Day which took place late last term! Our budding athletes showcased their speed, agility, and teamwork in a time filled with thrilling races and lively competitions. From the adrenaline rush of the sprints to the joy of victory in the relay races, every moment was a testament to the dedication and spirit of our young champions. A huge thank you to all participants, teachers, and supporters who made this day a great success!

Special thanks to Mr Eddision for coordinating a fantastic event!

Easter Chapel

Days before Easter, Primary finished the term with a special Easter chapel to commemorate the sacrifice that Jesus made for us on the cross. We learned how Jesus took our place as the sacrificial lamb, dying on the cross for our sins once and for all. His shed blood covered all our sins, and he rose again to give us eternal life with our Father in Heaven. This is definitely something to celebrate. We had a wonderful time worshipping and celebrating all that our Saviour, Jesus Christ, has done for us.

Romans 5:8, “But God showed his great love for us by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners.”

Empowering 7B

As we stand on the threshold of a new chapter in our journey, it's an opportunity to pause and reflect on the remarkable experiences we've shared so far in 7B. As the homeroom teacher for 7B, I am privileged to witness the hand of God at work in the lives of our students, guiding and empowering them along their educational and spiritual journey.

In Term 1, our 7B students embarked on adventures that shaped not only their academic progress but also nurtured their faith and character. The Year 7 camp was more than a recreational getaway; it was a sacred space where students experienced God's creation, strengthened bonds, and discovered the power of prayer and fellowship.

Term 1 was also marked by significant events like Athletics Day and NAPLAN assessments. While providing opportunities for personal growth, it was the collective experiences at the camp that truly exemplified the spirit of empowerment and unity among our students. Whether cheering on teammates at the finish line or supporting each other through exam nerves, our students demonstrated resilience, compassion, and a commitment to uplifting one another. As we transition into Term 2, the theme of empowerment continues to resonate. In the coming weeks, I am excited to witness our students embrace new challenges, pursue passions, and make a difference. Let us nurture a culture of empowerment in 7B, where every student feels valued and supported to reach their fullest potential. May we find strength in God's promises and joy in our pursuit of excellence.

In His grace,

Benny Ng

STUDENT REPRESENTATIVE COUNCIL

Hey everyone! Lewis and Cristina here, your SRC Captains for 2024, and we are thrilled to be serving the college this year by leading the Student Representative Council.

Having attended Lighthouse Christian College since 2012 and 2019, we have personal experience with the principles and values that have influenced the diversity and culture of our school. These faith-based principles, including our new H.E.A.R.T values, have, and will continue to enrich our sense of community and service, as well as direct our path with God altogether.

One aspect of the SRC that we continue to recognise through our work is that there’s a lot more to it than the eye perceives. Our council is more than just a team that plans events and activities for the student body, but rather, a committee of diligent members who aim to truly improve our school’s system by addressing issues in a way that positively impacts as many people as possible (both within and outside our community). We, as your leaders, plan to be the voices that spread ideas, needs, and wishes you have, and think should be implemented within the school. In return, this serves as an encouragement for all students to grow and become prosperous members of society.

With that being said, please feel free to talk to us or your class representatives at any time! All input is most welcomed with us.

A few verses to think about today:

1 Peter 4:10 states “Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms.”

Mark 10:45 states “For even the son of man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as ransom for many.”

Japanese Students Exchange Program

It was our privilege to have 10 Japanese students from Year 9 Shibuya Junior School visited our school for 7 days at the end of Term 1, marking a delightful exchange of cultures and fostering new friendships across borders. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to our Japanese visitors for their warm presence, cultural contributions, and the cherished memories they leave behind.

Mrs Jing Tang

LOTE Faculty Leader

Here are some messages from Lighthouse Year 8 students:

The past few days with you all have been amazing and fun. I learnt many new things about Japan, and I am glad that I could share a bit about Australia to you all as well. I enjoyed it a lot and it would be amazing for you all to possibly come to Australia again. I also hope that you all enjoyed Australia a lot and your time here, and I wish you all a safe trip home on Monday.

ご来場いただきありがとうございました。

(From Andrew In, 8B)

My Experience with the Japanese students these past few days has been very inspiring and exciting. Their work ethic, manners and culture were all very interesting to see. From my experience I can tell that my buddy Takeho and the other students are very respectful and hardworking people in class. I am incredibly appreciative for the opportunity to work with the Japanese students and be their buddy.

(From Tim Xie, 8B)

My experience with the Japanese students was great! It was really interesting and fun to hangout with them. In humanities we learnt how to pronounce some words in Japanese and talking with Yumi was very fun and interesting because it allowed me to understand some things about her and Japan! I loved spending time with them and hopefully we will meet again. Thank you for the memories and experiences and have a safe trip back!

(From Fiona Zhou, 8B)

Messages from the host families:

Firstly, we want to express deep thanks to school and your fantastic arrangements too. We had a really good time with the Japanese student as our family member this March. We cherish this experience in our good memories. Zimo struggled to share mother's love with others, as he is my only child and had no experience of staying with brothers or sisters before. After all, he grows up, and understands how to find the goodness from Japanese student and look after him. During these days we also learnt about some Japanese cultures and nice manners the Japanese student presented in front of us. We wish we could be involved such programs more in future. Maybe exchange students visiting can be a normal program in our school every year.

(Zimo’s mum, Lily)

It was a great experience having the Japanese kid. Together we watched the AFL game at the stadium for the first time, watched the Kongfu panda movie, played games, and made good memories for us to cherish. Casual family chats were great opportunities for animated explorations of new perspectives and glimpses into foreign cultures. And l also got the chance to watch my kid getting along well with someone new to our family and who have different cultural etiquettes which they can learn from each other, which also broaden his views and built his confidence.

(Gene’s mum, Tao)

Hosting a Japanese exchange student was such a privilege and a great experience for us a family. We learnt about a different culture and our children made a wonderful friend. We enjoyed sharing different Aussie experiences with our exchange student and her presence in our lives was a blessing to us all. We highly recommend this program and would love to host again if the opportunity arises. (Rosie’s mum, Janita)
