DEPUTY PRINCIPAL'S REPORT

Last week was a memorable week for Lighthouse Christian College with a number of events happening over the course of the week.

The Cultural Day featured a range of activities where our students had the opportunity to celebrate the amazing diversity within the College. It was an opportunity for students to showcase their cultural heritage and learn about the cultural traditions of their peers. The highlight of the event saw students and teachers dressed in traditional costumes. Proceeds from this event will go towards supporting families from the recent earthquakes in Turkey and Syria where we are hoping to provide at least one family with food and accommodation for six months.

Over the weekend, our Year 11 students who are taking the Gravitate, Certificate 3 in Christian Ministry and Theology course, attended a camp at Philip Island Adventure Resort. This camp focused on outreach training where they learnt to “communicate theology in everyday language”. The Gravitate Camp was an excellent opportunity for students to develop their social and leadership skills while also learning the importance of teamwork and communication.

Meanwhile, NAPLAN testing is currently underway for our students in Years 3, 5, 7, and 9. The tests are designed to assess student proficiency in reading, writing, language conventions, and numeracy. While NAPLAN is an important assessment tool, LCC is committed to ensuring that students feel supported and encouraged during the testing period. Teachers have been providing students with a range of resources and strategies to help them prepare for the tests, and the school community is coming together to ensure that students feel confident and well-prepared.

The crowning moment of the week was undoubtably our Twilight Fair and School Tours. This event saw the whole community come together to celebrate the school's cultural diversity and showcase the talents of our students. The fair was a great success, with numerous prospective parents also attending the school tours. I would like to take this opportunity to thanks our staff for all the hard work that went into making this event such a great success.

Overall, it has been an eventful week at LCC, with the Twilight Fair, Cultural Day, the Gravitate Camp, and NAPLAN all taking place. The school community has come together to celebrate diversity, encourage teamwork and leadership, and support student learning and growth.

The children helped Mrs Lim to make a big pot of corn soup. They listened attentively to given safety rules before the cooking started and the ingredients to make the soup. The children had turns to do different task for the preparation such as pouring the carton of stock and empting a few tins of cream corn into the pot, stirring and mixing them together in the pot before it was cooked on the stove. They were enthusiastic learners and participanted throughout this cooking activity. The highlight was that most children enjoyed the freshly homemade soup and had a few servings because it was delicious!

9B Homeroom

With excitement, passion, and delight, our sincere classmates and our teacher Miss Dutta welcome the new year of 2023 in 9B. She has been a fantastic blessing to our class overall. Our homeroom embodies the month's theme of love since it has developed our homeroom into a loving family. In our morning homeroom sessions, we learn to develop, adapt, and socialise as individuals take inspiration from one another and grow spiritually, mentally, and physically. We all enter the homeroom each day with a big smile on our faces because Miss Dutta has given us happiness, love, and joy. We as a homeroom are appreciative and pleased to have a wonderful teacher leading our homeroom in Year 9 because Miss Dutta makes it memorable and something to never forget. 9B are eager to see what this year will bring for our homeroom and what the Lord has planned for us.

9B at the beginning of the year created a weekly schedule for each day. This routine informs how we manage our time in homeroom lessons every day.

Monday: Free time! This is 9B’s opportunity to spend time with our friends and tell them about our weekend.

Tuesday: 9B want to understand more about Miss Dutta, and this is her occasion to share or tell anything, therefore she speaks to our homeroom on this day about any of her stories or devotions. We cherish this chance because it allows us to talk to our homeroom teacher and learn more about her life story.

Wednesday & Thursday: Devotion time. God is the creator, sustainer, and the ruler of the universe. God is a Spirit, infinite, eternal, and unchangeable in his being, wisdom, power, holiness, justice, goodness, and truth. He has performed an enormous amount of sacrifice for us, and now is the moment for us to show our commitment to Him fully.

Friday: Exercise time and games! On this day, we are allowed to get some vitamin D on the oval and get our legs and body moving as it is a vital part of our well-being.

“I appeal to you, brothers and sisters, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree with one another in what you say and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be perfectly united in mind and thought.” - 1 Corinthians 1:10

TECHNOLOGY

Students have been working hard in Technology as they complete their Food Technology, Design Technology and Digital Technology subjects. Our aim is to provide students with multitude of opportunities to develop as a person. Through the activities, students will learn to persist through challenges, think out of the box and provide creative and effective solutions. In this newsletter, we would like to focus on the wonderful things that Year 12 Food technology students have been up to.

As the students walked into classroom last Friday, they were met with fresh ingredients including fresh chilis from Mr Sorn Norng’s (our Food Technology teacher) home garden. Students were given the challenge to pick ingredients from the provided items and had 5 minutes to plan what they will cook. Although most of them had nerves to begin with, they adapted and were flexible to meet the task requirement and produced wonderful dishes by the end of the 2 periods.

Students learnt not only the techniques of cooking prior to the lesson but also to work quickly and creatively. A comment in class was that this challenge resembles Masterchef’s mystery box challenge and indeed it did! Do enjoy the pictures taken from the lesson. We apologize that we were not able to capture every student with their dish before the students were too excited to try their own creations.

CHAPELS

It has been so good to gather as a secondary school every Thursday for Chapel this term! Here is a snapshot on the past two weeks.

Seeing students participate in helping lead Chapel this year has been an immediate highlight, such as Melwin To (Yr 11) stepping out to host the

message-segment last week! Melwin coordinated a discussion panel of students and teachers to whom he put forth questions about faith and their understanding of who Jesus is. The panel included Jayden Rajeshkumar (Yr 11), Gabriel Cruz (Yr 11), Mer Nyawelo (Yr 12), Mrs Lor and the College Principal

Mr Leong. It proved to be a great opportunity to hear from some different voices in the Lighthouse community, with a make-up of differing Church backgrounds and unique testimonies.

A couple of weeks ago we were also privileged to hear from Mel McLoud who’s a missionary with YWAM (Youth With A Mission) Kona, in Hawaii! She shared a powerful testimony on how she came to be a passionate follower of Christ, and how God has impacted her life to bring her to where she is today. Fun fact: Mr Kan was once her teacher!

We are so excited to see students continue to step up, and have more guest speakers inspire us in chapels to come. Praise God for the way He moves on our hearts during these opportunities!
