PRINCIPAL'S REPORT
Another achievement
Last week, we celebrated our Prep students’ 100 school days in our College. It is a milestone that these students had achieved in coming into a routine formal school setting.
Taken from Nehemiah 8:10 - “… for the joy of the LORD is your strength.” I certainly hope that these children will have joy of the Lord in their lives, knowing that our Heavenly Father is always there for us as He will never leave nor forsake us in all circumstances.
As we inch towards the end of the school year, may I encourage you to take stock of God’s goodness to you and your family.
At Lighthouse Christian College, it has been our trademark in being a relational school. For students to attain their best potential, parent-school partnership is extremely important. In building this community, we are organising a Parent Breakfast session on Tuesday, 22 August from 8 am to 9 am. I am looking forward to meeting and chatting with some of you during the session.
Blessings,
Wing Leong

Raising Resilient Kids- taken fromhttps://families.org.au/article/raising-resilient-kids/
How to teach kids to bounce back after they face adversity or hardship.
“Hey, Izzy, do you want to race?”
My daughters were playing in a soccer field one afternoon when Mikayla, 8, issued the challenge to her 6-year-old sister. “Sure,” Isabelle replied. “To that tree?” She pointed toward the other side of the field.
“OK!” Mikayla said, “Readysetgo!”
She took off at a sprint, securing a several-step head start before her sister recognised what was happening. Isabelle started after her, running pretty well but devoting much of her energy to screaming, “You cheated! You cheated!”
Then there was Lexi, who at 3 years old was usually not a recognised participant in these contests. But neither that technicality nor her sisters’ insurmountable lead would deter her. “Ready, set, go!” she echoed, running as fast as her shorter, chubbier legs could take her. She tripped and fell once, scrambling back to her feet to keep going.
As the parent on duty, I felt I should tell the girls to try to play fair and not completely freak out when life doesn’t seem that way. But I allowed myself a moment of warm pride toward little Lexi and her resilience that often surfaces whenever she is outsized, outrun or outwitted by her older sisters. The picture of Lexi motoring determinedly across that field remains stamped in my mind as an icon for a trait I want all my kids to have as they negotiate life in a world that is often hostile and unfair.
I may not be the fastest. I may have gotten a poor start, and I may fall down. But I’m going to get back up and keep running.

Secondary Chapels Term 3
This term in Secondary Chapel we have had the pleasure of having a variety of guest speakers share with our students! In Week 2, we heard from our Year 9 Palm Island Missions Team as part of our NAIDOC Chapel, celebrating the First Nations people of Australia. The team shared their personal, heartfelt stories of interacting with the community in Palm Island. It was also great to hear them encouraging the Year 8 students to take up this amazing opportunity next year!
In Week 3 we heard from the Gideons- an association with the purpose of distributing and making Bibles accessible across the world. Each student was gifted a New Testament pocket book, and it was so great to hear from Wayne Dyson who spoke on the importance/relevance of the Bible in our lives.
Week 4 was a really special Chapel, as we had the privilege of hearing from our Faith Captain, Melwin To (Year 11). He shared an impactful message on the power of words and how they can be used to either build others up or tear others down. Most recently, we had a special visit from Youth Alive in Week 5 with guests K-WAK (Kid with a Kalling) and Henri Vaillant which was heaps of fun!
Additionally, it’s been do encouraging to see increasingly more secondary students volunteer to be a part of the Chapel Band and use their giftings and talents to honour God. We can’t wait to see what God does in more chapels to come!

PRIMARY - ELC - YEAR 2
This week, the children have been busy and actively working with a range of puzzles. Big, small, new, familiar, and challenging ones. Some children worked independently and others who chose to work in pairs or in a small group. There were lots of peer tutoring happening during the puzzle activity; students who are competent would help those who needed help to complete their chosen task. Some children took on new challenges to try out new puzzles. Throughout this learning curriculum, Mrs Kwok has observed the children displaying enthusiasm, positive attitude, teamwork, cooperation, helpfulness, problem solving, logical thinking, persistence, and mathematical concepts to complete puzzles that they have selected. Well done, champions!
This term, Year 2 students engaged in a variety of different learning experiences to further develop their knowledge of their community. As a part of this learning, students were blessed by Mr Leong (College Principal), Mrs Sthavan (Nurse), Mr Kreshwansingh (College maintenance staff) and Mr Elias (College IT staff) who shared their work experiences and some tools they use in their role.
This learning experience created opportunities to connect with their school community and develop a sense of belonging.

SWIMMING
Students from Year Levels 3,5 and 6 participated in practising their swimming skills and building confidence in the water. The students were highly engaged and roaring with excitement on the bus when travelling outside of school. This was an amazing opportunity to see students practise their backstroke, freestyle, and other swimming techniques. After continuous weeks on practise, the students enjoyed a lovely cold icy pole to conclude the end of their swimming adventures. What an honour it is to see many students be active participants!

11B HOMEROOM
It has been a delight to be the homeroom teacher for 11B this year. The class is full on personality and seeks to be an encouraging community. It has been wonderful to see each student grow throughout the year and develop their God given talents. Many have also worked diligently in leadership roles to see the College improve and create a culture amongst students that is engaging and relational. As each of these students pursue their dreams and develop into responsible young people, I encourage them to know that God is with you every step of the way. Don’t be afraid to take on new challenges and discover what God has in store for you. An exciting future awaits those who follow Gods plan.
With blessing,
Mr Mitchell Buck

TECHNOLOGY FACULTY UPDATE
Dear Lighthouse Community, before we dive into the business of Term 3, let us take a moment to reminisce the achievements in Term 2. We ended Term 2 with a bang! Our Year 7/8 Food Studies students started the year with zero or minimal experience in cooking and have completed their final cook of the term of making fried rice. A few of them even earned the title of LCC MasterChef. A big shout out to Keanu Issa for designing our LCC Masterchef logo. Thank you for your contributions!
We would also like to thank Mrs Debra Shipston for such wonderfully planned lessons and for the wealth of experience that she bought to LCC. We wish her all the best and pray that God is with her in her next chapter of teaching career.
Now, in Term 3, we will have new elective classes running for the Year 9 and 10 students. We hope to give you the latest update once we have successful work to share. Year 7 and 8 Makerspace students will be embarking on a Tournament of Mind challenge in their lesson time. They have the challenge titled ‘Birds of TOMadise’. We are excited to have a group of Year 8 students from 8A participating in this competition on 19 August 2023 at Deakin University. Do join us to congratulate their effort and persistence in ensuring that they achieve the best that they can. The rest of the students are also completing this challenge as part of their learning activity in Makerspace.
Parents, do spend the time to speak to your child about this challenge and the benefit of improving their soft skills such as creativity, collaboration, critical thinking, communication and Christian character through a challenge such as this.
In Christ,

BREAK IT DOWN AND LISTEN - WORDS OF WISDOM FOR THE YEAR 9/10 MUSIC CLASS
On Thursday 10 August, students in the Year 9 and Year 10 Music Performance class had a professional drummer join their class to talk to them about what is involved in being a full-time performer.
Daniel Farrugia is a drummer and percussionist whose performing, recording and touring work spans many years and numerous countries. He has worked with artists such as The Cat Empire, Angus and Julia Stone, Tina Arena and Kate Ceberano, and has also released two of his own records. When not on tour, Daniel teaches casually at The University of Melbourne and various secondary schools.
Daniel talked with the students about approaches to music practice
including:
Daniel also talked about important things to remember when playing in a band, including:
Students had the chance to develop their rhythmic skills with Daniel as well as ask questions. They also performed their favourite class song, ‘Wade in the Water’ to him, which Daniel was very impressed by!
Here are some of the things that students in the class had to say afterwards:
‘In the workshop, Daniel taught us about the most optimal way to practise. He talked about how when you’re practising you should break things into smaller pieces. Daniel also did an improvised performance for us in which he used different percussion instruments.’ Henry Ho 10B
‘I really liked Daniel’ s improvised solo. It was so interesting how much he had to improvise and not lose momentum to make it work.’ Kevin Tran 10C
‘I did enjoy the workshop because an expert musician came here to teach everyone. He even played one of his songs which made everyone including me admire his talent.’ Man Ajay 9B
‘I’m quite inspired by his words and his performance, especially his solo performance, I hope I can see more.’ Marcus Puy 10
Overall, the time with Daniel was really informative and inspiring and we thank him for taking time out of his busy schedule to teach the students at Lighthouse. He liked being here so much that he even stayed to work with Mrs Bhatt and some of the primary students after recess. Thankyou Daniel!
