DEPUTY PRINCIPAL'S REPORT

LCC has had a term full of exciting and memorable events, creating a vibrant and engaging environment for students. Let's take a moment to reflect on some of the highlights that have made this term truly special.

One of the most heart-warming events of the term was the Primary Mother's Day assembly. Students poured their hearts into creating beautiful performances to honour and celebrate their mothers. From heartfelt songs to touching encouragements, it was a special moment to acknowledge the love and sacrifices of these remarkable women.

Another highlight was the Primary gymnastics program, where our students showcased their agility, flexibility, and teamwork as they tumbled, flipped, and balanced their way through various routines. This was a fantastic opportunity for students to develop their physical abilities and build confidence.

The term was also filled with intense CSEN sporting events, where our students competed against other schools, displaying their skills in a range of disciplines From basketball to soccer, our athletes exhibited determination and sportsmanship, making us proud of their achievements. In the spirit of healthy competition and physical wellbeing, our Primary and Secondary students also participated in both Interhouse and Interschool cross country events. Students embraced the challenge, running with determination and perseverance, demonstrating the wonderful talents that they have been blessed with. There was a strong sense of camaraderie as they cheered each other on, fostering a supportive and inclusive atmosphere.

To promote team-building and personal growth, a number of our students embarked on various excursions throughout the term. From adventurous outdoor camps to educational excursions, these events provided opportunities for students to bond, learn new skills, and create lasting friendships.

Lastly, the term concluded with a focus on spiritual growth during our Christian Studies Day. Secondary students engaged in thought-provoking discussions, participated in meaningful worship, and deepened their understanding of their faith. This day provided a valuable opportunity for our students to grow spiritually and reinforce the Christian values that form the foundation of our college.

As we look back on the term, we carry with us memories of achievement, friendship, and personal and spiritual growth. We look forward to the next term, filled with new opportunities and experiences that will continue to shape the lives of our students and community.

I trust that you enjoy the holidays and time with your families and that you will all return safely in Term 3.

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” Matthew 11:28

Yours in His service

Legacy Parenting

Last Thursday, we had a privilege of having Eric Agyeman from Focus on the Family, come share and impart some inspirational tools for parents to focus, think about and put into practice at home, to make family relationships a priority with God in the centre of it all. As much as we may want control over our children’s digital devices and the time used for social media, we mustn’t ignore the truth behind investingtime in building and strengthening relationships with our children, and role model how we would like them and us to spend their time together as a family. This in turn earn and develops trust and a deep respect between the parent and the child. The destruction, delusion and disconnect that social media feeds any mind (not just children) can be redirected, repositioned and restored through healthy family relations, role modelling at home, and understanding/taking hold of the truth of God (through Scripture) of who He is, and who we are in Christ. Our phones and social media is merely a distraction and a means to fill a void that only God can fulfil. May we all continue to pursue the will of God and take hold of the truth behind who he has created us to be, as well as embrace the unconditional love he lavishly bestows upon us.

Christian Studies Day & Day of Prayer

Last week, our college had the great opportunity to take part in two impactful spiritual events that have been a tradition for many years. On Monday our secondary students took part in Christian Studies Day. We had the honour of hearing a message from Pastor Dave Reardon, the Director of Youth Alive Academy.

Students also took part in various creative workshops, including dance, photography, philosophy and drama. Our theme for the day was ‘What’s my Next Step?’, where students were able to explore the next step in their personal faith journey. It was a day full of fun, energy and lots of creativity. Importantly, we pray that students’ hearts were stirred and transformed, as we continue to pray that they each encounter Jesus.

On Thursday, we had our termly Day of Prayer. The Chapel was transformed with ten prayer stations where students and staff could write and share their prayers. It was incredibly heart-warming to see so many staff and many classes of students visit throughout the day to band together in prayer as one. From young students in primary to our older secondary students, it was a delight to see all engaging in prayer throughout the day. 1 Thessalonians 5:17 teaches us to “pray without ceasing” – we were blessed to have the opportunity to spend one day in our term dedicated to this and to be able to teach our students the

importance of prayer, as it remains the foundation of our college.

The Primary Wellbeing and Physical Education Departments are joining forces to help inform and equip our students in their wellbeing and physical health. From June 1 to June 23, students in Years 3-6 are participating as class teams in 'The Push-Up Challenge' .

The 'Push-Up Challenge' is an Australian initiative designed to:

  1. Raise awareness about mental health
  2. Improve physical fitness
  3. Improve mental health and wellbeing
  4. Connect with others
  5. Become more educated about wellbeing
  6. Raise funds for the 'Push For Better Foundation' (to help support people with mental health challenges)

This is not a competition, but rather, a team activity to complete 3144 push ups per class - 1-23 June (on average this amounts to about 10 push-ups per day per student on school days). Students may complete regular push ups, knee push-ups, wall push-ups, sit-ups, or another equivalent activity approved by Mr Eddison. Students can complete the activities at their own ability level and will not be forced to participate more than they are able. It will take place on school days and times suitable to students and teachers.

Parents and families can play their part to support students in the following ways:

  • ASSIST your child understand how to do a push-up correctly
  • ENCOURAGE your child to set realistic personal activity goals
  • TALK about the importance of physical activity and its positive impact on mental health
  • DONATE to the Push For Better Foundation – via the Lighthouse Christian College – 2023 Community page:

PRIMARY - ELC - YEAR 2

Cooking Noodles for Lunch

The children bought some noodles to make a meal in the kindergarten. The children were engaged in a meal preparation session, where they were encouraged to cut some vegetables like cauliflower, broccoli, and carrots. They also used scissors to cut open their noodles packets into a cooking pan. The children looked forward to eating noodles for their lunch.

Cooking a meal in kindergarten was both a fun and challenging learning experience. The children were challenged to cut vegetables and open noodles packets which strengthen their fine motor and hand-eye coordination. The children also had the opportunity to learn about healthy eating and working as a community to prepare a meal.

STEM - YEAR 1

This week, for STEM, the Year 1 students made their very own igloos! They worked in pairs and used packing peanuts to make the igloos. They took lots of care making sure they had just the right amount of water on their packing peanuts and carefully, they stuck them together. It was great fun and the igloos turned out so well. Well done, year 1s!

Prince and Princess Day

Last week the Preps celebrated Prince and Princess Day in a royal manner. We dressed up in our best clothes, decorated golden crowns and read the story of Queen Esther – a true princess in God’s eyes, such was her faith and courage. We learnt that we are all prince and princesses in God’s kingdom, no matter who we are, where we live, or what we have.

PRIMARY - YEARS 3 - 6

Year 5/6 CSEN Rally Day

The Rally Day was a roller coaster, with buses pulling out in the last minute, and finding out late in the preparation that only two schools were participating. It seemed that this year’s Rally Day would not going to go ahead. But, God is good and He had other plans and He provided a way so that the day could run as planned and the Year 5 and 6 students were still able to have fun!

The students had a successful day, with us, winning 3 flags out of 4! The boys LIGH A, and girls LIGH A took home the tchoukball flags, and the LIGH A girls took home the soccer flag. Seeing the students coming back to school with so much pride and joy from their achievements and the hard-work and competitiveness they had, made all the teachers proud.

LCC will continue to invest and develop the sports programs so that our students can have the opportunities to excel, develop holistically and lifelong skills and memories.

SECONDARY

‘Therefore encourage one another and build one another up, just as you are doing.’ – 1 Thessalonians 5:11

I believe that this verse, 1 Thessalonians 5:11, succinctly reflects the class atmosphere of 8A homeroom. In 8A, we want to support each other, both spiritually and academically. I find my classmates, no matter how talkative they may be, are always willing to help each other both in our work and just in general.

Throughout the term, we have put up many posters and decorations in our classroom to make it unique as 8A itself. Each morning, our class has a morning devotion from our homeroom teacher, Mrs. Stone. For me, homeroom is a time to remind ourselves of God and to prepare for the demanding school day ahead of us. So, I just want to give you this piece of advice, to pull each other up and build upon one another in your daily lives.

Technology faculty update

Dear Lighthouse Community,

It is always great to be able to share good news about what our students are learning, especially when it has to do with sustainability and how we can create a circular economy. On Thursday 25 May, the Product Design students ventured out into Abbotsford Convent for an excursion – Impermanent.

Through this excursion, students learnt about creative works that designers and engineers in the field created using mycelium, the root-like structure of a fungus to revolutionize the way we tackle plastic waste.

Mycelium as a biomaterial can have many uses. In the exhibition, we saw that it could be made into textile for clothes making, shelter or habitat for wildlife that has fire retardant properties, building materials and even to make furniture. Students gained insight into the multitude of uses of mycelium and hopefully was inspired to create a more sustainable future for themselves.

Reflection from student: through this excursion, we learnt about how mycelium is a sustainable alternative for Styrofoam, bricks, and plastics. Plastic in the ocean is killing animals and harming ecosystems. Mycelium can eat plastic and reduce pollution. Transitioning from linear economy to circular economy ensures a better future for humankind.
