PRINCIPAL'S REPORT
Dear Families of Lighthouse Christian College, In our first newsletter for the year, I would like to introduce to you our theme for 2024 “New Life at Lighthouse.” For those who enjoy planting, you would have witnessed the growth of the plants through every stage. This year, the College is embarking on a journey for continuous improvement and maintaining the highest level of child safety in our school operations.
We have planned many exciting lunch time activities, music programs, school production, in/excursions and meaningful events that students can look forward to this year. On 5th February, we initiated a VCE Awards Presentation Assembly. Our Year 13 students were invited to attend this event together with the Secondary students. Our Dux, Josiah Ly, Proxime Assessit, Caitlyn Stephens, Top VCE-VM Tianna Nguyen and top academic achievers for the individual VCE subjects were honoured. During the Dux speech, Josiah challenged the VCE and VCE-VM students to make every day count while in the College as the final year will go very quickly.
As a College, we are committed to becoming a School of Choice for staff and students, supporting students in achieving their individual excellence and making positive impact to our community. It is our desire to work alongside you in every part of your child’s educational journey in the College.
As illustrated in the diagram, when the three parties are working closely together with Christ at the centre, your child will flourish in learning and attaining his/her best possible potential.
It is timely to welcome new staff and students to the Lighthouse community. For the new students, I pray for the Lord’s peace to be with them, and they will find His joy every day! We are thankful for God’s provision of the following outstanding staff members.

WELLBEING
Traits of Effective Parenting
Happy New Year and welcome back everyone! We trust you had a good break and a positive start to 2024 and the new school year. As our spiritual theme is ‘New Life’ at Lighthouse Christian College this year, I would like to take this timely opportunity to revisit our framework and holistic approach to student wellbeing. As the Lighthouse Community is made up of many sectors, ultimately our main partnership is between The College – The Church, and The Home with Christ being the centre working all things together for His good will and purpose (Romans 8:28).
Being a father of 3 children myself, no one foolproof manual for parenting exists that provides the ultimate solution for all three children. Each is fearfully and wonderfully made in the image of God, yet each created unique and special (Psalm 139:14, Genesis 1:27 & 1 Peter 2:9).
Despite not having accessible a one stop shop/cookie-cutter approach to parenting, there are several traits of effective parenting (presented by Focus On The Family) that can be applied to all children in all contexts and situations. These traits also align with our college Values (H.E.A.R.T.). I encourage us all to reflect on our parenting styles and techniques and self-assess how much we possess each of these traits – Adaptability – Respect – Intentionality – Love – Boundaries – Grace & Forgiveness and Gratitude. I’m sure there are many others we can think of, and each of these traits points back to our college values – Humility, Empowerment, Authenticity, Respect, and Tenacity toward all people in all circumstances.
As our children grow up and observe our every word and move, it is only imperative that we role model and train our children in the way God has created and desires them to be (Proverbs 22:6). To identify your strengths and areas of growth as a parent, you can take a short online assessment and receive a wealth of resources that will assist you with your journey as a parent. www.focusonthefamily.com/7traitsassessment
Focus on the Family Australia not only has an extensive library of online resources but also a great set of Broadcasts (Podcasts) that cover a wide range of topics from having conversations with your teen to cultivating a child’s habits for a healthy relationship with God. www.families.org.au/broadcast
God’s richest blessings upon all families in the Lighthouse Community this year so all may have life more abundantly (John 10:10b).

PRIMARY - ELC - YEAR 2
Children had a wonderful time on their first week of kinder. They enjoyed participating in the large and small group learning, learnt about Creation through a bible story, engaged in the discussion and a creation song that we have learnt this week. This will help children to develop a sense of belonging and ownership of the class, and be responsible to care for their environments (the classroom and play areas). It was so great to see them confidently explore and engage with the indoor and outdoor experiences with educators and peers.
PREP'S FIRST DAY
The school year kicked off with joy and laughter as our adorable Preps took their first steps into the colourful world of learning. With backpacks almost as big as they are, they dove into new friendships and exciting classroom activities, making the first day a memorable start to their educational journey. Here's to a year filled with growth, discovery, and lots of fun for our youngest scholars!
PRIMARY - YEARS 3 - 6
FIRST AID
From Years 4 - 6, students had the privilege of participating in First Aid run by St. John’s Hospital. It allowed students to revise and practise their skills in the fundamental importance of DRSABCD. It provided a rich opportunity for knowing what to do in an emergency and the skills to put into place.

SECONDARY
Hey! It is Brandon and Monique, your college captains for 2024! We are both so excited for this year and all the new opportunities that God has given us. We hope to make an impact in our community by creating opportunities for students to bond through lunchtime clubs, and community-wide events among many more, and to develop an even stronger verve for Christ through the heart values of the lighthouse community. Here’s a little bit about our journeys with God:
Monique:
I grew up in a family with a strong faith in the Lord, and passion for spreading God’s love. They heavily influenced my life and I would be an extremely different person without them. My journey with God hasn’t always been easy, struggling to wrap my head around the concept of Christianity. But God has proven time and time again of His faithfulness and His everlasting love for me when I turn to Him. I believe that God has given Brandon and myself a defined purpose with this role as college captains, to inspire the Lighthouse community to discover and establish a new and profound relationship with God.
Brandon:
Personally, my journey with God has been the classic prodigal son story. I have experienced many things that have understandably shaken my faith in God. For a long time, I have always learned to question what and why I believe what I do. During the pandemic, this questioning became even more intense, and I left 2020 with more holes in my belief than ever. Fast forward to 2022, my experiences with my friends and teachers here at Lighthouse led me back to growing my faith. I now understand that it's normal to doubt and sometimes question things, but what matters is getting back up and putting your trust in God to guide your path. I am particularly thankful to Monique, as she is someone I see show God’s love to everyone, and is a big motivation to me. I am excited to work with her and am certain we shall change our school for the better.
Both Monique and Brandon:
Even though it is our last year of schooling, we still believe that this year will be a year of growth, fresh beginnings, and new life before we step into the real world. We hope to live and lead 2024 with the heart values; of humility, empowerment, authenticity, respect, and tenacity.
We believe that God has given all the student leaders this privilege for a reason, and we wouldn’t have been given this opportunity if God didn’t believe that we could take it head-on and make a difference in our community! We are thrilled to be blessed with such an incredible team and hope to impact those around us, and the wider lighthouse community.
A bible verse that we hope to live this year by is: Proverbs 16:3, “Commit your work unto the Lord, and your plans will be established.”
