What is Godly Parenting?

There are over 800 students from over 30 nationalities enrolled at Lighthouse Christian College. Each nation brings their own set of values, traditions, expectations, and cultural beliefs. These factors alongside our personal experiences of upbringing and life, shape, and mould us to who we are today, and determine how we interpret and engage with the world and the people around us.

On one hand, we can perceive this as overwhelming as it brings out too many ideals and opinions to consider which creates confusion. On the other hand, we can adopt the best aspects of each culture, create a fusion hotpot of ideas which culminates to something quite spectacular and impossible if we did not have the opportunity to be cross-cultural. We see this occur in the context of food – there are wins and losses when fusing different cuisines together.

When it comes to parenting styles, this can really open up pandoras box. How to filter, choose the best parenting technique to one child, let alone a second or third – there is no manual or book that helps us apply a cookie-cutter approach to all children. God has created each of us to be unique and special (Psalm

139:13-14), and therefore it is important to seek God for wisdom, guidance, and knowledge. He ultimately is the one who knows our children the best, the plans, and purposes that He has for them (Jeremiah 29:11). Therefore, through seeking the Lord for this insight, understanding and revelation are we better equipped to journey with our children and guide them along the path that God has destined for their lives (Prov 22:6).

Through a lens of Godly parenting and model of discipleship, we pray and hope our children capture a love for God, desire to pursue His plans for their lives, and heart to see Him glorified in all that they do (Mark 12: 29-31). If this resonates with you and you would like to know more about Godly Parenting, I encourage you to come and attend our 4th and final Parent Workshop of 2023 on the 25th of October. See flyer, SEQTA and Consent2Go for further details.

PRIMARY WELLBEING

Well, our Primary Students certainly took advantage of the many opportunities to engage RUOK? Week at the end of Term 3, with activities being held every day! Wednesday Lunchtime was a big hit – the sun was shining and over 100 primary children celebrated in our Primary Courtyard today joining in with our 'O'

themed games and activities. The music was pumping and the students couldn't get enough!

On the official R U OK? Day, Thursday 14 Sept, almost as many children visited the Library Foyer. They created a mural, had fun with props at the Photo Booth, and played Conversation Bingo. An unplanned highlight was some impromptu worship music time led by a year 6 student. Oh... and yes... we can’t forget

about the donuts!

Special thanks goes to all of our wonderful Year 6 Primary Captains who helped to prepare and run the lunchtime events so well! Thanks for your support. Let’s keep the conversation going – because a conversation could change a person’s life.

God bless,

Mrs Karen Lloyd (Head of Primary Wellbeing) and Mrs Cherrie Marshall (Primary Chaplain)

I really appreciated the opportunity to perform on R U OK day. I have always wanted to lead worship and R U OK day was perfect for it. R U OK day for me is about caring for others. Caring for others is important to me because it is important to God. God wants us to check in with one another and take the time to listen. It was very encouraging to have people join me in worship on R U OK day. Thank you to all who joined me on this important day!

LEARNING ABOUT SUN PROTECTION

The children need to know and understand the sun safety rules, to lead a healthy life. In term 4 the children are required to put on sunscreen and hats before they go out to play. The teachers spent some time talking about sun safety to children. During the discussion, we talked about how we can keep ourselves safe from sun and sunburns, why we need to put on sunscreen, why we need to wear hats, etc.

The children are learning and understanding how to stay healthy and safe from harmful UV rays. They are becoming independent in applying sunscreen and wearing hats to protect themselves. The children put on sunscreen and hats before they went out to play. They had sun safe outdoor fun time!

YEAR 1 EXCURSION

After learning about all the different Australian animals, Year 1 students went on a trip to Moonlit Sanctuary. There they saw kangaroos, dingos, koalas, Tasmanian devils, owls, wombats and many more. Not only did they get a chance to see and touch these different animals, but they were also given the opportunity to feed some of them! It was a wonderful day and all the Year 1s had a fantastic time at Moonlit Sanctuary!

YEAR 6 EXCURSION

Ladies and Gentlemen, do you want a place to spend time with your family for a day? Well, today I am going to tell you regarding the recent visit to an amazing place which is the Immigration Museum of Australia. The museum engages visitors with the history and experiences of immigration with cultural diversity. It is located in Melbourne and is open seven days a week. To begin with, it's an enjoyable experience because you will certainly be excited, as you can see ancient custom elephant masks, art study books, decorative pots, jewellery, and much more. Don’t you think it will be enjoyable? It was also fun experiencing this with my classmates and teachers like you can do with your family. My favourite part of the museum was seeing the paintings of how these immigrants lived. I am excited to hear what your favourite part of the museum will be.

In addition, it is educational for students and others who are learning about history and artifacts. They can gain an understanding of why people migrated to Australia. For example, an immigrant called Mr. James Lamsey who was born in China, came to Australia in the 1850s for the gold rush. On the other hand, Ugo Ceresial who came because of war in the Emilia Romagna, as a refugee from Northern Italy. Furthermore, adults will be engaged to see migration stories, as they have experienced similar events. Parents will share their experiences with their children. But some people might argue that there is too much information provided for children rather than adults. However, children will remember the information as they watch videos as well. For these, you must visit the Immigration Museum of Australia. I am sure I found your next destination with your family. I also promise you, that you will have a great time since it will be entertaining and informative. - Harish

Upon arriving to Australia as a tourist, immigrant and even if you were born here, you would recognise that most people are immigrants like you or your parents! Immigrants have been coming here ever since 1788 when the first fleet arrived and people like Asians, Britian’s, and everyone across the world are the reason why Australia built its foundation. Yes, immigrants practically built Australia. So, we recognise that some of the great people helped Australia’s economy grow with its people. In return the people of Australia built the immigration museum to make people recognise the diversity of people coming together through the stories they tell. Like Cuc Lam, she came here from Vietnam because of the war and to pay back for all the great things that Australia did for her she became Mayor of Maribyrnong City Counsel. Stories like these tell us why immigrants are important to our foundation and helps us recognise the different cultures of people coming together.

The immigration museum helps kids, teenagers and even adults the old ones too, recognise all the immigrants that helped us build Australia. There are even different programs that showed Year 6 Lighthouse Christian College students to learn immigration stories with the museum keeping it fun and educational as people had bright smiles on their faces. They got to explore having fun in the different rooms, like voices across time, or leaving home, they got to learn stories and what the immigrants had to deal with. Like Vietnamese people who had to go on boats that had thousands of people and they have gone on to survive in difficult situations and overall had a rough time, these stories are also told in the immigration museum. The immigration museum shares its stories across the Australia and help keeps things fun while being educational as they tell stories of how some of these immigrants from different cultures helped Australia’s economy grow with it’s people. This museum helps us learn history and I really recommend it, having a 4.4 out of 5 stars review on google reviews. So come on down to the immigration museum to endure the blossoming information about our countries people helping Australia our home. - Hilton

SECONDARY

INTEGRITY

Daniel was a devoted, loyal and diligent servant of God. He stood strong in his faith, praying three times a day, and constantly asking God for protection in the hostile city of Babylon where he lived. With Daniel’s strong commitment towards the Lord, He had blessed him with the gift of wisdom and the ability to interpret dreams.

During the time of Daniel, Babylon was well known for being saturated with sin, evil and idols. Daniel was a favoured administrator for the leader of Babylon, King Darius - and soon other governors became jealous of Daniel because of his tremendous gifts. In spite of Daniel, they created a rule stating that no one should worship any other god than King Darius.

Eventually Daniel was captured and thrown into the lion's den for worshipping and praying to God. King Darius had a fond liking for Daniel, so as the morning came, he rushed to the lion's den, finding Daniel alive and well.

Because of Daniel's continuous faith and focus on God, he was rewarded, living a prosperous life. We as Christians should use this story as an example of how we should live our day to day lives. We need to decide whether we are going to let sin and temptation control us, or whether we are going to stand strong in our faith in defiance of sin by showing integrity and faithfulness to God. How are we going to show integrity in our lives, and how are you going to stand strong in your faith when challenged?
