EMPOWERMENT
“Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.” – Joshua 1:9
As Principal, I have the privilege of meeting with different groups of our Year 12 students throughout the year. These conversations often reveal the uncertainty many students experience as they prepare to graduate and make decisions about their future, especially when they are unsure how they will perform in their final examinations. I remind both current and former graduating students that while ATAR scores may reflect their academic performance, these results do not define their worth or identity. Rather, they are one step in the journey ahead, opening pathways into further learning, training, or work. True empowerment comes when students understand that their value is not found in a number, but in who they are and the God who calls them forward.
Joshua 1:9 provides a powerful reminder of this truth. Our Heavenly Father’s care for us is far greater than any test result or moment of uncertainty. We can move forward with courage, confidence, and hope because He is with us wherever we go. This assurance empowers our students to face challenges not with fear, but with faith, knowing that God will never leave them nor forsake them.
A helpful illustration of empowerment can be seen in the Netflix series Beckham. David Beckham reflected on how his father trained him from a young age to take corner kicks with skill and precision. Over time, that preparation became a strength his team could rely on in crucial moments. In one important match, with his team trailing and only minutes remaining, Beckham delivered the ball accurately into the attacking area. His teammates built on that opportunity, scored the equaliser, and the team eventually went on to win the Champions League. In many ways, empowerment works similarly- through guidance, encouragement, and steady preparation, individuals grow in confidence and are equipped to make a meaningful contribution when it matters most.

My name is Robyn Hokai and I have the honour and privilege of being the new Secondary School Chaplain for Lighthouse Christian College. Over the last few years of my life, I have been working with young people in a youth ministry context as a youth leader and now a Youth Pastor. I am part of Shiloh Church Melbourne and have the honour of working as the Youth/Creative Pastor. My background is in nursing, and I am also currently working as a Registered Nurse as well as my Church’s Youth/Creative Pastor. I have my Bachelor of Nursing; Diploma of Leadership and I am currently studying my Master of Counselling.
I greatly look forward to what is to come, and I am excited to meet each one of the students and to watch them all grow deeper in their relationship with God and step into their God ordained purpose. My prayer is that each young person would thrive and pursue their God given dreams with boldness and courage. That every student would receive a revelation of God’s power and that He would give them strength in every season to do what He has called them to, just as The Lord says to Joshua in Joshua 1:9 “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.”

Sounds from the Lighthouse - Ensemble Showcase 2026
On Thursday 19th of May, the Lighthouse community had the joy of watching over 100 of our students perform as part of the Ensemble Showcase. This has become an annual event on our calendar, providing students from across our Primary and Secondary schools with the opportunity to showcase their learning in ensembles as well as gain practice performing for an audience.
Congratulations to students in the following groups for their wonderful performances on the night:

We were also blessed with a sneak peak performance by lead cast members of our Secondary Production of Mary Poppins Jnr. They left us in no doubt that the show is going to be ‘Practically Perfect’!
An event such as the Ensemble Showcase is not possible without many hours of planning, rehearsal and hard work on the day. Many thanks go to the following people for all the work they did to make our Ensemble Showcase a wonderful night of music-making!

Prince and Princess Day was a joyful celebration in Prep. The children arrived dressed as princes and princesses and enjoyed a special day of learning and fun. They completed an excellent writing task about God’s amazing creation and reflected on the truth that we are all God’s sons and daughters, loved and uniquely made.

PRIMARY - Years 3 - 6
Year 6 Sustainability Excursion to The Briars
On Monday 25 May, the Year 6 students travelled to The Briars in Mount Martha to deepen their understanding of sustainability and environmentally responsible living.
Throughout the day, students participated in four engaging sessions. They explored the historic homestead on a self-guided walk, learning how food production and household practices have changed over the past 150 years. Students also took part in an informative recycling workshop, where they discovered practical ways to reduce waste and improve recycling habits.
Another highlight was a session on sustainable home design and energy solutions, held in a model sustainable house. Students investigated how homes can be designed to conserve energy and reduce their environmental impact. The final session was a hands-on exploration of sustainable food systems, including learning about worm farms, food miles, and keeping backyard chickens.
The excursion provided valuable real-world connections to our sustainability studies and inspired students to consider how they can make environmentally responsible choices in their own homes and communities.

Gravitate Camp
Our Year 11 Gravitate students recently attended the Leadership Training Camp at Phillip Island from Friday to Sunday, joining students from a range of Christian schools across Victoria for a weekend focused on leadership, faith, evangelism, and personal growth. The camp included chapels, discussion groups, electives, worship, team activities, trivia, campfires, and leadership workshops designed to strengthen students in both faith and practical ministry skills.
Throughout the weekend, our students represented Lighthouse Christian College exceptionally well. They engaged thoughtfully in discussion groups, contributed positively to activities and electives, and continued developing their confidence in sharing and defending their faith in a respectful and meaningful way. Students also participated in a variety of workshops, including sessions on apologetics, leadership, missions, worship, and understanding the Bible through a historical lens.
It was also great to see students getting involved during worship sessions, with Ashleen joining the choir and Isaac playing the bass throughout the camp.
Overall, the camp was a valuable opportunity for students to build friendships with other Christian students, grow spiritually, and further develop their leadership and evangelistic skills.
Applied Learning Elective
Our Applied Learning elective students have been busy growing their own vegetable patch and recently enjoyed the rewards of a successful harvest. To celebrate, students participated in a "mystery box" cooking challenge, where they combined their freshly picked produce with a selection of additional ingredients to create healthy and delicious meals. The activity provided a wonderful opportunity to develop teamwork, creativity and practical cooking skills while experiencing the satisfaction of preparing food they had grown themselves.
Visit to Velisha Farm
Did you know that 94% of Australian children aged 2–17 do not eat the recommended five serves of vegetables each day? Experiences such as our visit to Velisha Farm help encourage healthy food choices by connecting students with fresh produce and fostering a positive attitude towards nutrition and wellbeing.
Our Year 9 and 10 Applied Learning students recently visited Velisha Farm, gaining valuable insight into where food comes from and the importance of healthy eating. Students learned about sustainable food production and developed a greater appreciation for the journey from paddock to plate. The visit further inspired students as they continue developing their own veggie patch. Interestingly, if you purchase your vegetables from Aldi, there is a good chance they have come from Velisha Farm.
