Learning through play exploration!

We were blessed with a few days of warm weather last week. The children had a fantastic time exploring and engaging in the outdoor environment. The big red saucer was a hit. A group of children initiated and made a choice to actively exploring the big spinning saucer.

Amongst themselves, they practiced fair play with their peers, turn taking, negotiated verbally who to go in the saucer (two), who to push or spin it (two) by holding onto the edge of the saucer and also enhancing their gross motor and coordination skills. The children remembered the safety rules given by the teachers when participating in this physical activity. They voiced their play experience; “Feeling dizzy, it’s fun, wobbly, spinning round and round, like a spinning wheel, I like it fast.”

Van Gogh’s The Starry Night

This week in class the Year 1’s used as their inspiration “The Starry Night”, painted by the Dutch post-impressionist Vincent van Gogh. Their artwork was made by using oil pastels on dark paper to bring out the patterns and swirly lines. These are just a small collection of the lovely art pieces put together by our children. I hope you enjoy them as much as we did!

NAVIGATE

“Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus”. Philippians 4:6-7

I’m grateful God, for so many things. I know that I’m not always the most grateful person you know, God. So let me take some time to tell you what I’m thankful for. This prayer resonates with me so much as I’m so grateful to God for all his guidance and hand with me in Lighthouse this year. He has blessed me with great, understanding, and supportive teachers and leaders. Without them and my family, it would be a great struggle.

I thank God every morning when I wake up for giving me another day. I always thank him for the love and care he gives me every minute of the day and throughout my life. I thank God for always keeping me safe and getting me through my work with great marks which I know God will help me achieve my goals. I thank God for looking after the students and teachers at Lighthouse. I appreciate His love and for keeping the Lighthouse family as one strong Christian Family.

Thank you, Lord, for the blessings you have bestowed on my life. You have provided me with more than I could ever ask for or deserve. You have surrounded me with people who always look out for me at home and at school. You have given me family and friends who bless me every day with kind words and actions and I am eternally grateful.

God’s goodness is undeniable. One of the things that cannot be denied is the goodness of the Lord to all of us. His power has held everything together from the beginning until the end. Whoever is grateful to the lord for what He has given to them will never doubt the greater blessings that He will bestow on us.

Integrity is a strong value that Lighthouse Christian College believes in and for the past few weeks 9B has been doing some activities that are influenced by this value. Our class played a few Kahoot quizzes in order to further understand the concept and why it is crucial in our lives. These small quizzes included scenarios that could happen in our day-to-day lives and we have to choose the answer or action that presented the most integrity and respect. All of us were able to practice a principle that will help us grow both mentally and spiritually for the time ahead at LCC and after we graduate.

A Bible verse I found that talks about integrity was Proverbs 10:9 which states “Whoever walks in integrity walks securely, but he who makes his ways crooked will be found out.” I believe this to be a very powerful verse. It is saying that no matter where you are and who is around you, you should always be doing the right thing as in the end whatever you do will always “be found out”. It is a very strong and important message that the Bible conveyed to us and 9B was able to learn about this throughout this term and we are very grateful for it.

YEAR 11B HOMEROOM

The new value of the month is excellence. To start our unit on excellence, the year 11B homeroom was posed with the following question, and their responses follow:

How can we demonstrate excellence?

Kyra: By having an effective routine in our daily lives that promotes productivity

Eric: By trying to work to the best of our capabilities.

Ivy: Being a positive influence, a sensitive or empathetic individual and an excellent communicator.

Grace: Do everything to the best of our ability.

Brooklyn and Chaboi: Taking time to think about what others expect from you and what you expect from yourself.

Michelle: By working to the best of our ability.

Bryan: The quality of being outstanding or extremely good.

Tanvi: Excellence is a skill not a quality. To apply excellence, you must understand how your attributes influence your actions.

Matthew: Striving to be as close to perfect as possible.

Carleta: Being productive and working hard.

Jude: Do the best that you can in everything you do.

Oshien: Striving to do better.

Aarujan: Excellence is dependent on your own ability. So, work towards becoming better to achieve excellence.

Andy: Practise makes perfect.

The common theme that can be seen in all students' answers, is the idea of striving to do better. Excellence is often associated with good marks, good behaviour, and good works. Is this what true excellence should be? 1 Timothy 6:11 calls us to “pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, steadfastness, and gentleness”. 2 Peter 1:5 says to “make every effort to supplement your faith with virtue, and virtue with knowledge”. 1 Corinthians 15:58 says to be “steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that in the Lord your labour is not in vain”. These passages realise that as humans we will undoubtedly fall short of perfection. Therefore, the passages use language such as pursue, to make every effort, and labour for the Lord. Positive outcomes associated with excellence are merely an outcome of doing our best.

What is true excellence? How can you demonstrate excellence? What does the bible teach us about excellence?
